Style: between chaos and mastery

Which makes Art is My Revolt so captivating, it's the play of contrasts.

  • On the one hand, the portrait in black and white stencilwith its clean lines and crisp graphics.
  • On the other, the graffiti backgroundIt's full of splashes, drips and saturated colours, reminiscent of the tagged walls of big cities.

This blend creates a powerful visual tension: rigour versus spontaneity, heritage versus revolt, order versus chaos.
And it is precisely in this contrast that the magic of the work is born.

Van Gogh, the eternal rebel

With this creation, John Beckley reveals an aspect of Van Gogh that history has sometimes forgotten: his untamed side.

  • He refused to accept academic rules.
  • He chose the sincerity of his vision over the approval of others.
  • He painted from the heart, even if it meant being rejected.

In Art is My Revoltthis temperament is reborn in the guise of a urban punk icon. Van Gogh is not just represented: he is transformed into a timeless symbol of artistic revolt.

The stages of creation

This is how John Beckley created his work Art is My Revolt. These steps are there to guide you, but don't forget: you're free to adapt, divert and add your own personal touch.

1. Creating the background
John started by creating a colourful background in the spirit of street art, with splashes, drips and graffiti. You can follow this idea or invent your own. The important thing is to give your canvas a lively, expressive base.

2. Position the stencil and press the outline
Once the background was complete, he positioned the Van Gogh Punk stencil and applied a thin layer of black spray paint to the outline only. This marks out the silhouette of the character.

3. Draw a white halo
He then painted a white line about two centimetres around the figure. This luminous halo creates contrast and makes Van Gogh stand out against the background.

4. Fill the inside with white
The inside of the outline was covered in white paint. John chose to leave a slight transparency, so that the coloured background remained visible in places. This gives a rawer, more authentic effect.

5. Replace the stencil and stamp in black
Once this base had been laid, he replaced the stencil and sprayed a coat of black paint over the entire motif. At this point, the portrait takes on its full graphic force.

6. Correct the stencil bridges
The stencil's 'bridges' (the little parts that hold it together) were filled in with a fine brush and black paint. To keep the same shade, John sprayed a little black spray in a cup and used it as ink.

7. Add messages and slogans
To reinforce the punk spirit, he included punchy phrases such as "Art is My Revolt or "Born to paint, Born to burn. You can use these slogans or invent your own.

8. Final touches
Finally, John livened up the painting with a big blue splash at the bottom and the inscription "Van Gogh in orange using Posca markers. These details add an explosive energy and give the work a powerful signature.

💡 Tip: Follow these steps as a guide, but have fun varying the colours, changing the slogans or improvising your splashes. Your work will be all the more personal and unique for it.

The finished work: Van Gogh, the rebel icon

When you see the finished work, it's impossible to remain indifferent. With Art is My RevoltJohn Beckley projects Vincent Van Gogh into the world of punk, revealing what he has always been at heart: a rebel. Not just a rebel on the surface, but an artist who refused to accept codes, conventions and compromise.

Van Gogh never gave in to academic rules. His painting remained wild, visceral, untamed. Where others sought approval, he chose the truth of his vision, even if it meant being rejected. In this painting, this temperament is embodied once again, but this time in the form of a urban icon Studded jackets, raging slogans and splashes of saturated colour.

Van Gogh became a punk not only through his appearance, but above all through his attitude. It's the image of an artist who burns with passion and transforms that intensity into creation. Between memory and modernity, Art is My Revolt makes Van Gogh the a timeless symbol of artistic revolt The one who refuses to obey, the one who chooses authenticity at the cost of marginality, the one who shouts loud and clear that to paint is to live.
