Creating the Infinite: A step-by-step guide to painting a portrait of an astronaut in the style of John Beckley

John Beckley, known for his inimitable style, fuses Pop Art, street art and abstraction to create unique works. His style stands out for its bold use of colour, shape and texture to create a strong visual impact.

The subject: a portrait of an astronaut

In this demonstration, John creates a portrait of an astronaut, concentrating on the subject's head and shoulders. The combination of man and space offers an intense visual experience, combining the realism of portraiture with the freedom of abstraction. The work, entitled 'Facing The Infinite', is a true declaration of love for space.

Size and medium of the work

John works on an 80×80 cm canvas, a square format that reinforces the impact of the central subject. The stencil used, also 80×80 cm, was designed by John himself for our stencil shop.

The creation process

John's creative process is precise and methodical. He begins by creating a colourful and dynamic abstract background, typical of his style.

Step 1: the abstract background

To create the background, John uses acrylic paint, applying dynamic strokes to create a vibrant painting.

Step 2: applying the stencil

After creating the background, John positioned the stencil and applied a light coat of black spray paint.

Step 3: Removing unwanted colours

John then repainted the inside of the astronaut in white to erase the colours that shouldn't appear in the character.

Step 4: returning the stencil

After removing the unwanted colours, John replaced the stencil and applied a light coat of black spray paint to bring out the details.

Step 5: Adding shades of grey

John then adds shades of grey to create volume in the character.

Step 6: splashes of colour

Splashes of colour are added to bring the character to life.

Step 7: Finalising the stencil

John replaces the stencil one last time to reveal all the details that have been erased by the grey and the colours.

Step 8: Add dynamism and life

Finally, John adds splashes of colour and life to the canvas, adding shadow to the figure to make it stand out.

Tips to make your work a success

To prevent the spray paint from lifting the stencil, John recommends adding weights (such as mechanical washers) to the stencil. He also uses the tip of a paintbrush to hold the stencil in place.
