The Creative Process: A Window on Urban Art

1 – Le Fond Gris : John began by painting a background in shades of grey, evoking the atmosphere of an urban wall.

2 – Graffiti and Forms : With an urban touch, he enriches the background with stencil motifs and writing reminiscent of those found on city walls, imbued with the spirit of graffiti.

3 – Placing and masking : The stencil is carefully positioned, and the characters are masked so that the heart is painted an intense red, without putting any red on the characters.

Pro tip : For clean, precise outlines, John weights the stencil or uses the tip of a brush for perfect stability, not forgetting magnets if the work is to be executed on a vertical canvas.

4 – Silhouettes Revealed : Once the masking had been reversed to cover the heart, John used a can of black paint to bring out the characters.

5 – Light and Contrast : The interior spaces of the characters are then given layers of white to create contrast and luminosity.

6 – Finishes and Contours : A final application of the stencil allows John to make a final stroke with the black spray, refining the details and contours of the figures.
